Listen: How turkeys at a vegan sanctuary spend the holidays
CBC radio's Up North came here to Piebird Farm Sanctuary to meet the turkey-friends here and talk about how wonderful they are.

From all your friends here at @piebird_farm_sanctuary: During this season our human hearts parade towards peace. This is reflected in cards, carols and cheer -- but in contradiction to these ideals, many holiday traditions are the opposite of peace. Our kindness always extends to those around the holiday table, but what about those who you may put on the table? Like the companion animal-friends that we all love, every animal is an individual with sentience, feelings and love to share. But on farms, they are hidden away and treated like commodities at best. They are confined, crowded, stressed, abused and made vulnerable. They see only the worst of humanity. All the lives that share this earth with us want kindness, respect and love. They should be here with us and not for us. To create peace, we must consider all sentient beings and make better choices to celebrate the true values of the holidays. Our humanity is reflected in how we treat the most vulnerable. Peace begins with what you choose to put on your plate this holiday, and everyday. Peace begins with you. #VeganLove

New turkey-home fundraiser
These are some of the homes we built for the beautiful chicken-friends, duck-friends and goat-friends who live here at Piebird Farm Sanctuary, and we’ve just started fundraising for a new home for the beautiful turkey-friends who live here in sanctuary. We feel strongly about making sure that our advocacy is a 500 times more frequent than our fundraising but here is a meaningful way for you to get involved with the work we do here at Piebird Farm Sanctuary. We greatly appreciate your support.

Turkey-friend pics to inspire your heart:
Here are some of our fav recent turkey-friend pics from Piebird Farm Sanctuary / Vegan Farmstay:
This picture of LilaBeeper captures how we see turkeys: full of grace and elegance and beauty. Many humans who visit Piebird have never before met a turkey-friend. Often, their only familiarity with turkeys is that cultural symbol of a carcass on the holiday table with the family gathered around. Friends, when we are rethinking our cultural traditions because they no longer reflect our good values, we must also reimagine the associated symbols. Along the path to animal liberation, we must liberate the turkey from this distorted holiday symbol. Turkeys are magic, they deserve the highest of dignity. Rethink tradition to incorporate compassion, love and kindness. #VeganLove For more turkey-love, see: www.veganlove.ca/turkey For booking info at Piebird Farm Sanctuary / Vegan Farmstay, see: www.piebird.org (link in profile)
This clip of #RoseADoodle and Yan here at @piebird_farm_sanctuary is in a wonderful video of turkey-love that our friends at @free_from_harm put together. Do go check out the whole video and feel the love! They say: "It seems like we all could use some extra hugs right now— so we made you this video. Please share the love, keep hope, and never stop working for a kinder world." #VeganLove ~ www.piebird.org
As a sanctuary, we dedicate our lives to Animal Liberation because liberty lives in every heart. This inner faith in freedom is also what links every social justice and environmental justice cause. In the upcoming coming-together, let us all broaden our deeds of kindness. By speaking up for all individuals we become indivisible. Assembly is the path to liberty. We can only secure our own freedoms by defending the freedoms of each other. Free peace. -Yan of @piebird_farm_sanctuary ~ www.piebird.org
We grow a lot of plant-friends for the sanctuary-friends who live here, so that every day is a special-meal day. Before starting Piebird 11 years ago, Sherry’s background was in healing with plants — and many of the gardens that Yan first dug here are now buffets for the friends. Here LilaBeeper enjoys the last of the comfrey-friends before Winter. #VeganLove
Love is true goodness. #VeganLove ~ w/ sweet #RoseADoodle @ Piebird Farm Sanctuary / Vegan Farmstay. As the season swings further into Autumn, the turkey-friends spend more and more of their time hanging around the main guesthouse here. Flocking together, together with us. Love. www.piebird.org (link in profile - Autumn booking online. In Ontario.)
We were blessed to preview @phoebedykstra’s conscious clothing collaboration with @theescapemovement yesterday when they came by Piebird to share their magic creations and catch some photos under a rainbow. The integrity and the love going into this *Increase Frequency* clothing collection is inspiring — it’s all made in Canada with friendly fabrics and conscious intention. Beautiful in every way! ~ Turkey-friend #RoseADoodle in particular fell in love with Phoebe, here they chill together in the grass together between shots - both wearing beautiful softness! #VeganLove cc @phoebesmindbodyspirit
One of Rosie’s favourite joys in the world is exploring the freshly turned soil. It’s meaningful watching how the sanctuary residents' joy brings so much joy to the guests who come here to stay. Witnessing all this freedom brings happiness to our hearts that are otherwise always aware of those who aren’t free. #RoseaDoodle
Pumpkin the turkey-friend!
Meet Pumpkin! Rescued from a turkey farm to a life of love, now living in sanctuary here. www.veganlove.ca/turkey PUMPKIN’S INSPIRING STORY: On Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, our friend Claudie walked up and knocked on the door of a turkey farm to politely ask to save a turkey's life. The farmer answered the knock on the barn door with a baby turkey already in her arms. The baby was having difficulty breathing and the farmer explaining that they received a "bad batch” of chicks this time that had spent a long time in transport. At 22 days old, this little baby was half the size of the other 8000 turkeys. She found her laying down, weak and not breathing well. Her husband was coming soon to end her life. The farmer handed over the little baby and Claudie took her home and named her Pumpkin. She nursed Pumpkin back to health and showed her a life of love. Pumpkin napped in sunbeams, played during bath time and the celebration of her personhood began. A couple of weeks later (on World Vegan Day), Pumpkin came to live here at Piebird Farm Sanctuary / Vegan Farmstay. As a contract grower for Butterball, the farmer had shared with Claudie how horrible it was to witness the crew handle these turkeys when they came to pick them up for slaughter. All of Pumpkin’s 7999 siblings will be killed for Christmas. But you can opt out. Speak up for turkey-friends. Instead of eating somebody's body, you can support a sanctuary or an organization who advocates for turkeys. We’re excited for Pumpkin’s story to continue to touch people and make a better world for turkey’s everywhere! The other turkey-friends here are excited to welcome her into the family. www.veganlove.ca/turkeyPosted by Piebird Farm Sanctuary / Vegan Farmstay on Thursday, November 5, 2015
Meet Lila, Turkey-ambassador extraordinaire! Lila is fairly new to Earth and even newer to sanctuary -- but she already has as many friends as she does feathers. Lila says that anyone, anywhere, can be her friend -- they just have to say these three words: "I Love Turkeys!" www.farmfreshfriendship.ca
Fernando is celebrating the hope of independence for turkeys today: He's all dressed up in red white & blue and working towards a brand new day when all of his turkey brethren are free as well! Remember American friends, the turkey is the true national bird-friend of your nation! Don't eat turkeys, just like how you wouldn't eat eagles!
If your child has a huge interest in dinosaurs and you had the opportunity to introduce them to a living, loving one, would you: A) kill, cook and serve the dinosaur to your family without telling them B) celebrate this wonderful creature and learn more about it New research suggests that turkeys and chickens have experienced fewer genomic changes than other birds as they evolved from their dinosaur ancestor. Yes, turkeys and chickens are the most dinosaur-like. Last year, a U of Alberta researcher found that some feathered dinosaurs used tail plumage to attract mates, just like turkeys do.
Our next "Turkey-Friend Appreciation Day" is this coming Sat December 20th, between 11 and 2. This is your chance to make new friends (turkeys)! Really, if you find yourself eating a turkey-friend and you have not ever made the effort to meet a turkey-friend, that is just rude. And if you have met a turkey-friend and you still find yourself eating turkey-friends, then, well, that's pretty messed up. -- Email email@example.com to schedule in your visit with your new turkey-friends! www.piebird.ca/sanctuary
